Hitler responded by renouncing the German-Polish Non-Aggression Pact and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement. Slovakia, a province of Czechoslovakia, just above the Hungarian annexed zone, became an independent Catholic state with close links to Nazi Germany. Despite their ideological opposition, a pact between Germany and the Soviet Union suited both of their territorial aims. Another 5,000–6,000 people died of unspecified reasons related to expulsion making the total amount of victims of the expulsion 15,000-16 000 (this excludes suicides, which make another approximately 3,400 cases).

Unlike the less developed regions (Ruthenia, Moravian Wallachia), the Sudetenland had a high concentration of vulnerable export-dependent industries (such as glass works, textile industry, paper-making, and toy-making industry).

 • Lend-Lease Beneš's interest in maintaining friendly relations with the Soviet Union was motivated also by his desire to avoid Soviet encouragement of a post-war communist coup in Czechoslovakia. Coolidge insisted that the German-inhabited regions of West and North Bohemia remain within Czechoslovakia. France, however, had refused to disarm due to fears about future wars with Germany following the devastation that they experienced in the First World War. Unlike with the Sudetenland, these provinces were not incorporated directly into the German Reich.

The two countries, which were ideological enemies, agreed to peace between each other for ten years. České země v éře první republiky (1918–1938). The Admiral Graf Spee was used in the Spanish Civil War, before being sunk by the British at the start of the Second World War in 1939.

The number of expelled Germans in the early phase (spring-summer 1945) is estimated to be around 500,000 people. In December 1943, Beneš's government concluded a treaty just with the Soviets. Soviet activities led much of the local population to believe that Soviet annexation was imminent. The executive committee of the Slovak People's Party met at Žilina on 5 October 1938, and with the acquiescence of all Slovak parties except the Social Democrats formed an autonomous Slovak government under Jozef Tiso. The villages of Lidice and Ležáky were completely destroyed by the Nazis; all men over 16 years of age from the village were murdered and the rest of the population was sent to Nazi concentration camps where many women and nearly all the children were killed.  • First Indochina War

France was in a state of internal political disarray due to a change in government, and therefore they were not prepared to take military action without British support. From the defeat of the Bohemian Revolt that collapsed at the 1620 Battle of White Mountain, the Habsburgs gradually integrated the Kingdom of Bohemia into their monarchy.

An international commission representing Germany, Britain, France, Italy, and Czechoslovakia would supervise a plebiscite to determine the final frontier.

On 8 May 1944, Beneš signed an agreement with Soviet leaders stipulating that Czechoslovak territory liberated by Soviet armies would be placed under Czechoslovak civilian control.

It was centered at Banská Bystrica. Hitler used other countries refusal to disarm as a pretext for withdrawing Germany from the League of Nations. Hitler also identified a time frame in which the war for Lebensraum would ideally take place: 1943-45. This agreement was called the Munich Pact. At the meeting, Hitler discussed his plans for foreign policy in the years ahead. Over 1,600 barricades were erected throughout the city, and some 30,000 Czech men and women battled for three days against 37,000–40,000 German troops backed by tanks and artillery. Whilst the British protested that the action broke the terms of the Treaty, they were not willing to go to war over it. Entire steel and chemical factories were moved from Czechoslovakia and reassembled in Linz, Austria which incidentally remains a heavily industrialized sector of the country.

 • Western Ukraine Part of the borderland was also invaded and annexed by Poland. The Nazis were not interested in preserving some Slavic autonomous territories or states right in the center of Europe. Along the Bohemian Forest in the west, the Czech lands bordered on the German Slavic tribes (German Sorbs) stem duchies of Bavaria and Franconia; marches of the medieval German kingdom had also been established in the adjacent Austrian lands south of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and the northern Meissen region beyond the Ore Mountains. Praha 2002. Setting up an artificially high exchange rate between the Czechoslovak Koruna and the Reichsmark brought consumer goods to Germans (and soon created shortages in the Czech lands). The government accepted these claims on 30 June 1938. On the 13 March 1938, Austria was incorporated into the Greater German Reich.  • Iwo Jima On 28 September, Chamberlain appealed to Hitler for a conference. The Allies agreed to concede the Sudetenland to Germany in exchange for a pledge of peace. Beneš's proclamation of April 1944 excluded former collaborationist Hungarians, Germans and the Rusynophile Ruthenian followers of Andrej Brody and the Fencik Party (who had collaborated with the Hungarians) from political participation. The government in exile—with Beneš as president of republic—was set up in June 1940 in exile in London, with the President living at Aston Abbotts. About 500,000 Sudeten Germans joined the Nazi Party which was 17.34% of the German population in Sudetenland (the average Nazi Party participation in Nazi Germany was 7.85%). Following Nazi Germany’s move, Hungary soon made territorial claims on the south of what was formerly Czechoslovakia.

The Czechoslovak government resisted, arguing that Hitler's proposal would ruin the nation's economy and lead ultimately to German control of all of Czechoslovakia.  • Belgrade The Czechs thus rejected the aspirations of the German Bohemians and demanded the inclusion of the lands inhabited by ethnic Germans in their state, despite the presence of more than 90% (as of 1921) ethnic Germans (which led to the presence of 23.4% of Germans in all of Czechoslovakia), on the grounds they had always been part of lands of the Bohemian Crown.

The delegation was to mobilize the liberated local population to form a Czechoslovak army and to prepare for elections in cooperation with recently established national committees.

Hitler’s next target was Poland. On 10 October 1938, the Sudetenland was occupied by the German Wehrmacht and annexed. Nevertheless, German cultural influence grew stronger during the Age of Enlightenment and Weimar Classicism. The French government did not wish to face Nazi Germany alone and took its lead from the British government and its Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Many of the Germans who stayed in Czechoslovakia later emigrated to West Germany (more than 100,000). From 1627 the Habsburgs enforced the so-called Verneuerte Landesordnung ("Renewed Land's Constitution") and one of its consequences was that German according to mother tongue gradually became the primary and official language while Czech declined to a secondary role in the Empire. On the 26 January 1934, the Nazis made an unexpected diplomatic peace move by signing the German-Polish Non-Aggression Pact. Intent on obstructing conciliation, however, the SdP held demonstrations that provoked police action in Ostrava on 7 September.

The coup failed and Kurt von Schuschnigg replaced Dollfuss as chancellor.

This newspaper cutting was taken from an Austrian newspaper printed on the 12 March 1938, and shows the support that the German troops had from the population of Austria. Moreover, before the establishment of the Iron Curtain in 1952–55, the so-called "forbidden zone" was established (by means of engineer equipment) up to 2 km (1.2 mi) from the border in which no civilians could reside. The Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 affirmed the inclusion of the German-speaking territories within Czechoslovakia.  • West Hunan On 13 March, he invited Tiso to Berlin and on 14 March, the Slovak Diet convened and unanimously declared Slovak independence. As Czechoslovak troops attempted to restore order, Henlein flew to Germany, and on 15 September issued a proclamation demanding the takeover of the Sudetenland by Germany. Soviet and other Allied troops were withdrawn from Czechoslovakia in the same year.

Both Czech and German Bohemians suffered heavily in the Thirty Years War.

After World War II in the summer of 1945 the Potsdam Conference decided that Sudeten Germans would have to leave Czechoslovakia (see Expulsion of Germans after World War II).
